At the start of this month, we all watched in awe as new sporting Champions took center stage in the first ever multi-sport European Championships. The inaugural event brought together the existing European Championships of seven sports including athletics and aquatics.

Great Britain absolutely stormed the Championships, placing second on the medal table behind Russia and overall winning the most medals out of all of the countries competing.

We were absolutely glued to our TV screens throughout the Championships, not simply because the format of the event echoed the kind of excitement as an Olympic Games, but also because we had 25 of our athletes competing as part of the Great British team!

We were hooked to every race and we were absolutely thrilled that our athletes won a total of 3 Golds, 5 Silver and 2 Bronze medals.

Men’s 100m

The 100m men’s race is always one of the most highly anticipated events in any athletics tournament, but the European Championships 100m final managed to find itself splashed all over the news. This was due to two of Inspired Through Sport’s longstanding athletes, Zharnel Hughes and Reece Prescod, putting in an incredible performance which saw them dominate the race and claim Gold and Silver respectively. Even after this amazing display of athleticism, Zharnel’s hunger for success wasn’t fulfilled as he went on to claim his second Gold of the Championships in the 4x100m relay.

Women’s 4x100m

Britain’s dominance on the track was further exhibited by our athletes Daryll Neita and Bianca Williams who made up half of the Women’s 4x100m team which stormed the final and clinched yet another Gold for Great Britain. Between them, Daryll and Bianca have won plenty of international medals in this event, including Commonwealth Games Gold, World Silver and Olympic Bronze but it’s the first time the pair have won Gold at a European Championships – it’s clear to see that they enjoy standing on the top of the podium…long may it continue!

4x400m

We, at Inspired Through Sport, were addicted to watching every race at the European Championships, but the Men’s and Women’s 4x400m relay races were branded into our calendars as we had three of our athletes representing GB in these events – and they did not disappoint! Dwayne Cowan and Owen Smith were half of the GB team which had to battle in a very tight (and absolutely thrilling) final where they claimed a well-deserved Silver after they fought their way passed Spain on the home-straight!

The Women’s 4x400m relay proved just as exciting a race as the GB Women’s team, which included our athlete Amy Allcock, went into the final leg of the race out of the podium positions, but they continued to fight right up until they crossed the finish line with a Bronze medal!

Men’s 200m

Nethaneel Mitchell Blake managed to run an incredible 200m final where he managed to clock a seasons best time of 20.04 seconds to take Silver, only being beaten by Turkey’s Ramil Gulivey, who had to set a new Championship record to claim Gold.

Men’s 1500m

Jake Wightman had to run the race of his life in the 1500m final, as he found himself in 6th position with less than 200m to go, and yet he somehow managed to spur himself on around the final turn to spring ahead and claim a convincing Bronze.

Women’s 5000m

The Women’s 5000m proved to be one of most talked about events of the Championships as Israel’s Lonah Salpeter mistakenly stopped running a lap early when she was storming ahead in second place. During the confusion, Britain’s Eilish McColgan managed to charge through, finding unstoppable energy in her legs and was rewarded with a well-earned Silver medal.

The entire British team did amazingly well and managed to cement the multi-sport European Championships in the hearts of the British public!
